September 2002 Unicoi Newsletter

Well, you may have noticed we didn’t send out an August newsletter. August was cancelled due to a total lack of interest. Good riddance! Nothing was happening and we didn’t see any sense in pestering everyone with a pointless email. Now, however, things are beginning to look up. The last week of August brought some nice, welcomed rains and cooler temperatures. Let’s hope we’re
easing into a Fall weather pattern and good fishing is right around the corner.

In addition to good fishing, we have some exciting new things to look forward to this Fall. Among the few good things that happened in August was the approval by DNR’s Board of Directors of several new year-round trout streams. Two of
these streams are on private property and are available for guided flyfishing trips through Unicoi Outfitters.

We are even more excited about the addition of our newest trophy fishing opportunity at Cannon Falls Lodge. Located at the confluence of Dicks Creek and Frogtown Creek, Cannon Falls offers a unique fishing experience in which the angler will feel like they’re standing in the middle of a National Geographic photo. Currently, a beautiful lodge and rustic log cabins are being constructed on the property but we’re booking fishing trips now for late September on. Although the facilities are not complete, you can get a feel for Cannon Falls by visiting their website at http://www.cannonfallslodge.com.

And last, but not least, we are happy to announce Georgia’s newest Delayed Harvest Stream, the Chattooga River. Through a cooperative agreement between South Carolina and Georgia, a 2.5 mile section of the Chattooga River from the Hwy. 28 bridge
north to the confluence with Reed Creek, will now be managed under special catch and release regulations from November 1st through May 14th. Anglers will be restricted to artificial lures or flies only, single hooks (which do not have to be barbless but we
strongly recommend it). Dropper flies are OK. This could be the best DH stream in the state and will certainly be an ideal stream to take both novice and intermediate fly anglers who want to hone their skills. Unicoi Outfitters provides the only guide service
on the Chattooga River with a Forest Service permit and requisite liability insurance. Our professional guide staff works hard to make your trip successful and enjoyable. A full day guided trip for two anglers on the Chattooga River is priced at $225.00. We
provide lunch and any gear you may need. The Chattooga was one of the first rivers in the nation to be given special protection under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Give us a call (706-878-3083) if you are interested in fishing this great river.

A good website you may want to visit and bookmark is http://www.gofishgeorgia.com for a complete listing and fishing regulations and maps of trout streams in the state.

What's Up

Some items of interest in the shop: Ross Reels is bringing out a new, light weight large arbor reel for trout fishing and is discontinuing the production of the Canyon reels in sizes 1, 2 & 3. As a result, they have given us permission to place our current inventory on sale. The Canyon is a great large arbor reel that normally sold for $195.00 to $235.00. Unicoi Outfitters is placing them on sale at 30% off the regular retail price. If you’re thinking of purchasing a new reel for your trout rod, this would be a good time to consider the Ross Canyon. If you don’t have time to come by the shop, we’ll ship it to your home or office for a
nominal fee. Great reel, great value!

Other items on sale include one of our lines of fly rods and all our Hoffman Hackle. We can’t mention the name of the fly rods in our email (sounds like one of those sleazy TV ads, doesn’t it?), but we can tell you that it is one of the top brand names and, of course, comes with an unconditional lifetime warranty. We have them on sale at 30% off the retail price. Hoffman Hackle, since being purchased by Whiting Farms, is being discontinued and is on sale at 40% off retail.

Many of you are aware that we are proud to carry Tom Landreth’s wonderful trout fishing prints, both framed and unframed. You may be interested to know that some of Tom’s more popular prints are about to become “out of print”. For those of you who collect Tom’s work, we have two of his prints in the store which won’t be available much longer. We currently have framed print #380 of 400 of “Trout Waters” and framed print #199 of 200 of “Appalachian Rainbow”. When these are gone, you’ll only be able to find them on the secondary market at a considerably higher price. To view all of Tom’s works on the internet, visit his
website at http://www.tomlandreth.netfirms.com.

Going Fishing

We’re all chomping at the bit to get back on-stream and wave that long stick in the air. Fishing should begin to rapidly improve as we move into September. Moreover, cooler weather conditions seem to perk us up and we begin to get restless hanging around the house. Bottom line is it’s time to go fishing! If you have an opportunity, what can you expect to find? First, DNR has been regularly stocking several of the streams with Summer water conditions conducive to trout survival so you may find plenty of fish when you do get out. What flies to use? Nothing too complicated here. Your basic Adams with a nymph dropper should
cover most fishing conditions on the mountain streams. But then, it almost always does.

For the nymph, try using a small pheasant tail or hares ear tied at the end of a 20” dropper. We would suggest starting with a beadhead just to get the fly down near the bottom. If water conditions are extremely clear and the fish seem to be shying away from your fly, forego the bead and fish the same flies sans beadhead. Early in the evenings look for Light Cahills, size 16 & 18. One other group of flies to keep with you as Summer winds down would be terrestrials. With warm days, you’ll still find ants, beetles and cricket patterns taking some fish, particularly after a mid-day shower which can wash these critters into the stream.

Thank You

As always, we want you to know how grateful we are to have you as friends and patrons. We try very hard to exceed your expectations of our shop and our fishing trips. Early in September, we’re headed to Denver and the Fly Fishing Retailer World Trade Expo. We’ll keep an eye out for any significant new products and design changes that we think you will be interested in. Oh yeah, we’re also going out a few days early to do a little fishing. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.

If you know someone you think would like to know what’s going on with north Georgia trout fishing, please have them send us an email and request to be placed on our mailing list.

Tight lines!
