From the city limits on the south side of Helen, upstream to the headwaters and tributaries near Unicoi Gap, the Chattahoochee River provides many miles of varied trout fishing. Anglers who are willing to fish early in the morning and late in the evening are often amazed at the quality of the fishery on the 'Hooch through Helen and Robertstown. At the higher elevations of the Chattahoochee, you'll find a mix of stocked trout and wild trout. With true mountain stream characteristics, the upper 'Hooch requires stealth and delicate presentation. |
![]() Unicoi Outfitters makes frequent guided trips to this section of the river. Camping is available at several USFS designated campsites along the upper Chattahoochee River. |

Delayed harvest is a "fish for fun" management program that provides high catch rates and the opportunity to fish for larger than normal trout. Georgia has four delayed harvest streams: Amicalola Creek on the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area, from Steele Bridge Road downstream to Georgia Highway 53; Smith Creek at Unicoi State Park; the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta, between Sope Creek (off Columns Drive) and U.S. Highway 41; and the Chattooga River, near Clayton, from the Highway 28 bridge upstream to Reed Creek. The Delayed Harvest steams are open from November 1st to May 14th, and all fishing must be done with flies and artificial lures that have a single hook. All fish must be released immediately.
